Each year, Emerald Isle Realty pays tribute to an extraordinary individual by awarding the Barefoot Broker of the Year. This prestigious award is named after the late Jim Batten, one of the earliest EIR brokers and owners, known for his unique personality, strong work ethic, and exceptional character. This year, the Barefoot Broker of the Year award was given to Dennis Blazer, a deserving individual who exemplifies the same exceptional qualities that made Jim Batten such an extraordinary figure.

About Broker/REALTOR® Dennis Blazer

With over 45 years spent on the Atlantic Coast, from Charleston, SC, to Virginia Beach, VA, Blazer is proud to call the Crystal Coast his forever home. As a North Carolina General Contractor in Carteret and Onslow counties, his passion for homes and real estate started 20 years ago. Blazer is known for going above and beyond to ensure his clients' smooth and stress-free processes. In his free time, you find him enjoying the beautiful beaches, spending time at the pool with family, and supporting local communities.

About Jim Batten

Jim Batten was affectionately known as the Barefoot Broker due to his unconventional habit of going barefoot from Easter to Thanksgiving. Jim inherited Emerald Isle Realty from his sister Mildred Batten Simmons and served at the helm of the EIR team for a quarter of a century from 1975 to 2001; however, his legacy extends far beyond his bare feet.

Julia Batten Wax said, "Dad was known for those famous bare feet, for sure. He was one of the Greatest Generations who understood what it means to serve others, to put others first, and to do it all with humility." 

Jim Batten's journey was not limited to his title as the Barefoot Broker. Before his real estate career, he served his country as a World War II hero and had a successful career in journalism. His legacy continues to inspire and motivate others to this day. The Barefoot Broker Award serves as a reminder of Jim's remarkable qualities and commitment to helping others.
